There are three things that I like about New Year's - the countdown to the New Year's eve, the New Year's eve and the first day of the New Year. If it is the festive spirit of Christmas and a Birthday just two days prior to New Year's eve that makes the countdown so special for me, it is the feeling of letting go of the things of the past and an anticipation of the times to come that makes New Year's eve so special. But the first day of the year is the most special of it all, when festivities are its best and everyone is in their highest spirits.
So, what makes the first day of the year so special? If we were to look at it this way, it is just like any other day of the year, what's so special about this day? Why is it being celebrated with such grandeur all over the world? The answer I believe lies deep down in our hearts. 'People are rational', say popular economists, however deep down people are emotional. People need reassurance; they need to be constantly told that everything is fine. When things are not fine, they need to be told that things will get better soon and that they have to keep their 'Hope' alive. I guess it is this very emotion of 'Hope' that makes every New Year's day so special. It brings along with it splendorous rays of hope - hope for a better tomorrow, hope for making a difference in our lives and in the lives of others, hope for making this world a better place.
As a child, I used to look forward to gifts on New Year's. Growing up, I used to look forward to the holidays on New Year's. But after having blown out 29 candles on my birthday cake last year, I have moved on to something beyond gifts and holidays. This New Year, I look forward to something else. Like everyone I also hope for somethings very special.
This New Year, I hope that,
# 1: I can forget and forgive more easily
# 2: I can help someone without expecting anything in return
# 3: I can travel to a place that I have never been to before
# 4: I can be more thankful for and content with what I have
# 5: I can make a difference in a person's life through my work
# 6: I can learn something new
# 7: I can read as many books as I can possibly read
# 8: I can give my parents at least one of the many things that they had sacrificed to bring me up
# 9: I can love everyone around me and never hate anyone
# 10: I can tell the people around me how special they are
Here is wishing everyone a very Happy New Year! May 2016 make a positive difference in all our lives, May there be happiness and peace all throughout the world. I would like to conclude with one of my favorite slokas which I learnt, courtesy my Alma Mater -
